1933 R319 Goudey #35 Al Simmons PSA NM-MT 8
Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $2,350
Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. Of the 226 examples graded by PSA to date, only four examples of this card have ever been graded higher. Extremely high-grade example of #35 Al Simmons from the 1933 Goudey set. Hall of Famer Al Simmons is captured in a batting pose. The offered example is perfectly clean and crisp, with four sharp corners, and bold green text on the off-white reverse. The card is well centered with a very slight diamond cut. Low-number 1933 Goudeys are particularly difficult to find in extremely high grade due to the slightly poorer quality off-white stock on which they are printed (which is more easily prone to wear). Simmons was one of the best hitting outfielders in baseball for more than a decade, starting in 1924. He drove in at least 100 runs in each of his first eleven seasons in the majors. On the field Simmons was a warrior, intent on damaging the enemy and demolishing pitchers with his bat, stifling rallies with his glove, and upsetting infielders with take-out slides. He was best known for his odd batting stance, which earned him the name "Bucketfoot Al.” He finished his career with a lifetime batting average of .334. Simmons was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1953. This is a very high-grade example of this extremely condition-sensitive low-number card from the popular 1933 Goudey series. SMR value for the assigned grade is $2,800. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $2,350
