1932 R328 U.S. Caramel Near-Complete Set (27 of 32) Including Babe Ruth

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $14,100

Presented are twenty-seven of the thirty-two cards which comprise the classic multisport R328 U.S. Caramel issue, highlighted by nineteen Hall of Famers including a particularly outstanding example of #32 Babe Ruth. The five cards missing for completion are: #1 Collins, 3 Jones, 6 Dickey, 16 Lindstrom, and 26 Gehrig. The 1932 multisport set produced by U.S. Caramel is considerably rarer than Goudeys and most other 1930s sets, and has long been recognized as among the most desirable issues of the era. With their distinctive red backgrounds, they are also widely regarded as one of the most striking of all baseball-card issues. While this collection does vary a great deal in grade, when these cards arrived we could not help but be surprised at the exceptional high-grade of some of the cards. Nine cards (five of which we have selected) have been graded and encapsulated by PSA (except one SGC). The collection consists of the following: #2 P. Waner (HOF,Ex), 4 Terry (HOF, Ex-Mt), 5 Combs (HOF, Ex), 7 Cronin (HOF, Ex), 8 Hafey (HOF, PSA EX-MT 6), 9 Sarazen (golf HOF, Vg), 10 Maranville (HOF, Ex), 11 Hornsby (HOF, Vg-Ex), 12 Cochrane (HOF, Ex), 13 L. Waner (HOF, Ex), 14 Cobb (HOF, Ex appearance but with evidence of slight trimming along the top and right borders), 15 Tunney (boxing HOF, Pr), 17 Simmons (HOF, Ex), 18 Lazzeri (HOF, EX 5), 19 Berger (NM 7), 20 Ruffing (HOF, Ex), 21 Klein (HOF, Ex), 22 Dempsey (boxing HOF, NM 7), 23 Foxx (HOF, EX 5), 24 O'Doul (NM 7), 25 Sharkey (boxing HOF, Ex), 27 Grove (HOF, EX-MT 6), 28 Brandt (Ex), 29 Earnshaw (Ex), 30 Frisch (HOF, SGC EX/NM 80), 31 Gomez (HOF, Vg-Ex), and 32 Ruth (HOF; GOOD+ 2.5, this card appears to be in Excellent condition and has apparently been harshly downgraded by PSA due to a very light hint of a stain in the lower left corner. This is an exceptionally strong and attractive card. It is the best PSA-graded "Good" condition card we have ever seen. This is a killer card with an Excellent appearance that should be valued much higher than suggested by its PSA-assigned grade). This is a magnificent group of one of card collecting's most classic issues, with all cards having the "honest toning" that is characteristic of original-owner untampered-with cards from this series. This collection represents 84% of the entire set, and is an ideal foundation for the assembly of a beautiful 1932 R328 U.S. Caramel set. The SMR for just the nine PSA-graded cards (not including the eighteen ungraded cards) is $7,565. From the Charlie Conlon Collection. Total 27 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000+. SOLD FOR $14,100
