1920-1921 W514 "Black Sox" SGC-Graded Set Including Joe Jackson (7)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $2,644

The W514 "strip-card" set includes seven of the eight Chicago "Black Sox" who were banned from baseball for their alleged role in throwing the 1919 World Series. Offered is a complete subset of the seven "Black Sox" players from this issue, all graded and encapsulated by SGC: #3 Felsch (VG/EX 50), 15 Joe Jackson (GOOD 30), 31 Gandil (VG/EX 50), 35 L. Williams (EX/NM 80), 82 Cicotte (EX 60), 91 Weaver (VG/EX 50), 105 Risberg (VG/EX 50). This significant and very popular "set within a set," issued at the height of the media's attention to the scandal, is highlighted by Joe Jackson's only strip-card appearance. The set is in exceptionally high grade for this issue. The Black Sox subset, which has always been a favorite with card collectors, has an extraordinary display value. Dating from the time details of the scandal first unfolded before the public and the case was being heard in court, they also have an historical significance that transcends vintage-card collecting. Total 7 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $2,644
