1928 F50 Yuengling's Ice Cream #27 Ty Cobb
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $823
Graded VG-EX 4 by PSA. Extremely strong and attractive example of Ty Cobb from the 1928 Yuengling's Ice Cream set, featuring the legendary Hall of Famer in a batting pose. Cobb was in his final season in 1928, and though he was with the Athletics in 1927 and 1928, he is pictured on this card in a Tigers uniform. The Yuengling's Ice Cream set is identical in design to several other contemporary sets (Harrington's, Tharp’s, Sweetman, etc.), but with advertising for Yuengling's Ice Cream on the reverse. Bright and crisp, both front and back, with just a hint of border toning, and a touch of even wear to the corners. The card is fairly well centered, approximately 60/40 left to right and 55/45 T/B. Few cards of Cobb date from the late 1920s. The modest production quality of most cards in this era has kept these few cards relatively affordable, though the excellent value they represent and the distinctiveness of these issues have earned them a growing appreciation among advanced collectors in recent years. Yuengling's is one of the most substantial sets of the late 1920s. This is a relatively affordable yet extremely high quality and rare card of Ty Cobb dating from the end of his legendary Hall of Fame career.
