1887 N172 Old Judge Cap Anson - Portrait
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $2,938
Graded VG 40 by SGC. Very attractive 1887 N172 Old Judge portrait example of Cap Anson. The offered example is bright and crisp, both front and back, with just a touch of wear to the very sharp corners. The photograph is a little light, a characteristic which is common to most N172 Cap Anson cards. At a glance the card appears to deserve a higher grade. The card has been downgraded by SGC due to a tiny pencil mark near the upper right corner and a small stain and an area of abrasion in the lower right (visible only upon extremely close examination) on the blank reverse. Disclosure Notice: This card has been consigned to this auction by SGC principal David Forman. Prior to Mr. Forman's purchase of this card or his ownership of SGC, this card had been graded SGC EX 60. Believing the card to be overgraded and thus a poor reflection on SGC's expertise, Mr. Forman bought back the card after becoming a principal of SGC. At that time it was regraded to VG 40. This is an outstanding medium-grade example of N172 Cap Anson, one of the nineteenth century's most desirable and classic cards, and a card which would be a significant highlight in any advanced collection. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $2,938
