Extremely Rare 1887 N172 Old Judge Con Daily, No Name On Front "Anonymous"

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $940

Graded EX+ 70 by SGC. Highest graded! Offered is a rare high-grade example of one of the most unusual and distinctive of all N172 Old Judges: the "Anonymous" player card from the highly desirable N172 Old Judge series. Though not identified on the card, the card features Cornelius "Con" Daily, in a throwing pose. Neither Daily’s name nor a team name appears on this extremely rare N172 card . It is designed without player identification or team designation. Goodwin was always so careful to accurately identify each player, and each player's current team, that while there must be some story that explains this unusual anomaly, it has unfortunately been lost to time. Daily played thirteen seasons in the Major Leagues for seven different teams, and although not a major star, he did bat .320 in 1891 while with the Brooklyn Grooms. The card is bright and clean, front and back, with sharp contrast, and centered towards the bottom left. A light diagonal surface crease is visible on the blank reverse. When it comes to pre-1900 baseball-card collecting, N172 Old Judges will always be recognized as the most significant set, and this unusual N172 "Anonymous" player card featuring Cornelius Daily will always remain one of this important issue's most interesting and unique rarities. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $940
