1911 T3 Turkey Red Complete Baseball Set (100)
Starting Bid - $5,000, Sold For - $41,125
Very attractive mixed-grade T3 Turkey Red set ranges from Pr to Vg-Ex, with most cards grading between Fr and Gd-Vg, highlighted by extremely attractive examples of many Hall of Famers including Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson. Turkey Red cabinet cards are one of the most highly prized of all tobacco issues. They were available only by mail in exchange for coupons packaged with Turkey Red Cigarettes. Because Turkey Reds are large cards that are easily damaged, they are particularly difficult to find in high grade. This lot includes all 100 Baseball players (#1-50 and #77-126) plus one variation (#28) and one duplicate (#98) for a total of 102 cards. Twenty-eight of the 102 cards have the Turkey Red advertisement on the backs. Turkey Reds have long been recognized as one of the most popular and beautiful of all baseball cards, and are rarely offered as a complete set. We have selected nine cards (all Hall of Famers) to be graded and encapsulated by SGC: #9 Ty Cobb (VG 40, scarce anonymous back variety, bright and clean with brilliant colors, no creases, and downgraded from Vg-Ex due to a small surface abrasion on the reverse), 17 Clark Griffith (VG/EX 50), 18 Hughie Jennings (Authentic, slight trim on the bottom, o/w Vg/Vg-Ex), 23 Nap Lajoie (VG 40), 27 Christy Mathewson (VG/EX 50, gorgeous card with a perfect colors and registration), 36 Tris Speaker (Authentic, slight trim and major back damage, o/w Vg), 42 Cy Young (VG 40), 47 Frank Chance (VG 40), and 99 Walter Johnson (VG 40). The balance of the cards grade as follows: Thirty-four cards grade Gd to Vg (with a few Vg-Ex): #13, 15, 16 Evers, 20, 22, 25, 28 McIntyre (Bklyn & Chi.), 32, 37, 39 Waddell, 41, 45, 46, 50, 78 Baker, 79, 80 Bender, 82, 85, 87 Collins, 88, 89, 90, 92, 93, 95, 96, 97, 101 Keeler, 103, 107, 110, 112, and 117. Twenty-four cards grade Fr to Fr-Gd: #4 Bresnahan, 5 Crawford, 6 Chase, 7, 10, 19 Joss, 24, 26 McGraw, 33, 34, 44, 81, 84, 86, 91, 102, 106, 109, 114, 116, 120, 121, 122, and 126. Thirty-five cards grade Pr to Pr-Fr (most have pin or tack holes): #1 Brown, 2, 3, 8 Clarke, 11, 12, 14, 21, 28 McIntyre (Bklyn), 29, 30, 31, 35 Tinker, 38, 40 Willis (Pitt & St. Louis), 43, 48, 49, 77, 83, 94, two 98 (checklist and ad backs), 100, 104, 105, 108, 111, 113, 115, 118, 119, 123, 124 Wallace, and 125 Walsh. T3s are big cards, which due to their large size tend to be more easily subject to corner wear and creases than smaller cards, and were also often tacked up walls, which is why pinholes are so common with this issue. This collection represents a rare opportunity to purchase a complete low- to medium-grade set, with many very impressive Vg and Vg-Ex cards, among them many key Hall of Famers. Overall very consistent and reasonably uniform in grade throughout (though ranging in grade as noted), with many cards having far superior eye-appeal than their technically accurate grades. The equivalent SMR value for just seven of the nine SGC graded cards (not including the two SGC Authentic cards and the 93 ungraded cards) is $17,350. Total 102 cards (set of 100 Baseball subjects plus one variation and one duplicate). Reserve $5,000. Estimate $10,000/$15,000+. SOLD FOR $41,125
