1911 T3 Turkey Red Graded Partial Set (64 cards: 59 Different Plus 5 Duplicates)
Starting Bid - $1,500, Sold For - $9,988
Collection of sixty-four 1911 Turkey Red cabinet cards (59 different plus five duplicates), each graded and encapsulated by PSA or SGC. T3s are universally regarded as one of the most attractive sets ever produced. Because of their large dimensions, they are frequently found in technically low grade, with pin holes and other minor problems which have a great impact on technical grades, but are highly sought-after in all grades. This is a mixed, mostly low-grade group, but also includes four VG-EX 4 examples and two EX 5s. Other tobacco cards of the era such as T206s are far easier to find in a relatively affordable low grade. This is because Turkey Reds, which were issued as premiums in exchange for coupons only by mail, are considerably rarer than most other classic 1910-era tobacco cards. Most of these cards have tremendous visual appeal despite their various mostly minor condition problems. This is a very substantial, rarely offered large group, representing over half the set, that is ideal for the collector who is interested in Turkey Reds but does not want to spend the fortune (literally) that higher-grade examples would cost. Like many rare and desirable cards that have great collector interest, there is a ready market for attractive T3 examples in technically low grade. Fifty-one have checklist backs and thirteen have the Turkey Red advertisement on the reverse. PSA grading composite: Two EX 5: #95 ([MK], Turkey Red back) and 117. Four VG-EX 4: #7, 22 (MK), 37 (MK), and 111 ([MK], Turkey Red back). Nine VG 3: #6 Chase, 29, 41, 43 (MK), 86, 100, 104, 111 (Turkey Red back), and 118. Ten GOOD 2: #2, 44, 77 (Turkey Red back), 85, 88 (MK), 91 ([MK], Turkey Red back), 108 (MK), 109, 113, and 117 (Turkey Red back). Eleven PR-FR 1: #3, 11, 12, 20, 25 (MK), 31, 34, 48, 93 (Turkey Red back), 115, and 122. Seven Authentic: #10, 14, 28 (Bklyn), 33, 38, 89, and 90. SGC grading composite: Five VG 40: #13, 24, 119, 121, and 123. Four GOOD 30: #115, 116 (Turkey Red back), 120 (Turkey Red back), and 121. Five FAIR 20: #22, 30, 45, 103 (Turkey Red back), and 110 (Turkey Red back). Four POOR 10: #81, 82, 92 (Turkey Red back), and 106 (Turkey Red back). Three Auth: #49, 84, and 126. T3s are big cards; due to their large size they tend to be more subject to corner wear and creases than smaller cards, and were also often tacked up on walls, which is why pinholes are so common with this issue. This collection represents a very substantial start toward a very difficult to complete low- to mid-grade set, with many cards having eye-appeal far superior to their technically accurate grades. Total 64 cards. Reserve $1,500. Estimate $3,000/$5,000+. SOLD FOR $9,988
