1911 M110 Sporting Life Cabinet Honus Wagner

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $8,813

Presented is one of vintage-card collecting's most majestic and elusive cabinet-card rarities: Honus Wagner from the extremely rare 1911 M110 Sporting Life cabinet card series. This is an exceptionally attractive example of the key Hall of Famer in the set. This auction includes the complete M110 set, assembled and presented by the same consignor, with each card offered individually. In 1911, Sporting Life issued a set of six cabinets, which are universally recognized as among the rarest and most attractive cards of the era. From the earliest days of the hobby, this set has been revered as among the most desirable of all early twentieth-century card issues. Similar in design to T3 Turkey Red cabinet cards, these cards are considerably rarer than T3s (literally hundreds of times rarer). In fact, to put things into perspective, the M110 Honus Wagner is many times rarer than the famous T206 Honus Wagner. We know of fewer than ten surviving examples of the M110 Wagner in collectors' hands. The M110 Sporting Life set features magnificent pastel artworks of players in full-length action poses surrounded by a gray border with player identification along the bottom. A large advertisement for Sporting Life ("The Paper That Made Base Ball Popular") appears on the reverse. The Honus Wagner card features a particularly impressive batting pose. All cards from this set have always been highly prized by serious collectors. Because a T3 cabinet card of Honus Wagner was never issued (no doubt relating to Wagner's aversion to promoting tobacco to youngsters), the M110 Wagner has an all-the-greater appeal to vintage collectors. There is no other card quite like it. M110s are one of the rarest sets from the early part of the century, and are one of the most substantial and well-made card sets ever produced. This is a very attractive example of this important card, which is perhaps the most impressive of all Honus Wagner cards. The card is extremely bright and clean, both front and back, with only a few very light creases mostly in the border areas. SGC encapsulated this card as "Authentic" as opposed to giving it a numerical grade due to the card having four filled-in tack holes (virtually undetectable from the front, extremely minor but able to be located from the reverse) located in the border at the top center, bottom center, and both bottom corners. The four tack hole repairs are obviously very professionally executed and can barely be seen with the naked eye from the front. This is a beautiful card which, if not for the tack holes, would easily grade Very Good condition. This card presents a rare opportunity to acquire an exceptionally attractive example of one of Honus Wagner’s most significant cards from one of the rarest baseball-card sets of the era at a small fraction of the cost of a higher-grade example. Dimensions: 5-5/8 x 7-1/2 inches. Reserve $2,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $8,813
