1911 Zeenut Buck Weaver
Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $2,938
Graded GOOD 30 by SGC. This is an outstanding example of what is perhaps Buck Weaver's most majestic card: his 1911 Zeenut card, which pictures him with San Francisco of the Pacific Coast League, before his Major League playing days with the Chicago White Sox. This is an extremely attractive card of Weaver in full uniform posing with his hands on his hips. Due to its method of issue (one card per box of candy) and large size (2.25 x 4 inches), this card is usually found in far lower grade. The card is well centered, relatively clean front and back, displays light, even corner wear, and has a strong Vg-Ex (bordering on Ex) appearance. It has been downgraded from Vg-Ex by SGC due to a light photo album adhesive pattern and a few related very tiny hints of surface paper loss on the reverse. (In the old days, collectors sometimes put cards in photo albums designed with patterns of very light adhesive just strong enough to keep the photos in place when trapped under the protective plastic covering; when baseball cards are put in these albums and removed, an extremely light hint of a pattern and a tint bit of surface paper loss can result.) Buck Weaver, a member of the infamous 1919 Black Sox, has reached cult status in the collecting world. His cards routinely sell for more than Hall of Famers from the same sets in which he appears. Unfortunately for collectors, Weaver appears in few sets. This is a very strong and attractive example of the key card from this scarce minor league issue. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500.
