1910-Era Hall of Fame Tobacco Card Collection Including Cobb and Mathewson (7)

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,880

Collection of seven Hall of Famers, all dating from the 1910 era, from three different highly regarded tobacco issues, highlighted by a T206 White Border of Christy Mathewson and a T201 Double Folder of Ty Cobb. Six of the seven cards have been graded and encapsulated by either PSA or BVG (Beckett). 1-4) Four 1909-1911 T206 White Borders: a) Chief Bender/portrait (BVG VG-EX 4; very well centered, with bright and crisp colors. Appropriately downgraded by BVG due to a light surface wrinkle above the insigna on his jersey but otherwise Ex-Mt. El Principe De Gales advertisement on the reverse). b) Frank Chance/yellow (PSA VG-EX 4; centered to the top right, with even wear on the corners, and perfect registration. Piedmont reverse). c) Willie Keeler/batting (BVG VG-EX 4; bright and crisp, both front and back, with vibrant colors, and centered slightly to the left. The reverse is perfectly clean with a boldly printed Piedmont advertisement). d) Christy Mathewson/white cap (PSA VG-EX 4; centered just slightly to the left, with vibrant colors, and flawless registration. Piedmont back). 5-6) Two 1911 T205 Gold Borders: a) Eddie Collins/mouth closed (BVG VG-EX 4; centered to the right, with even wear on the corners, no creases, and bright colors). b) Joe Tinker (BVG EX 5; centered slightly to the top left, with perfect registration, and virtually no chipping on the condition-sensitive gold borders). 7) 1911 T201 Mecca Double Folders: Ty Cobb/Sam Crawford (Very attractive card with a slightly irregular factory cut along the left edge, but otherwise Vg-Ex/Ex condition). Seven sharp-looking quality cards of Hall of Famers from three of the premier baseball-card sets of the early twentieth century. Total 7 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500. SOLD FOR $1,880
