1910 E105 Mello-Mint Ty Cobb

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $15,275

Graded VG/EX 50 by SGC. Very attractive high-grade example of Hall of Famer Ty Cobb from this extremely rare candy issue. Because Mello-Mints are printed on such thin stock they are almost always found crinkled or creased. This is an extremely attractive example of one of the key Hall of Famers in the set. The card is bright and clean, both front and back, with deep, bright colors, no creases, and even wear to the corners. The card has 45/55 left-to-right centering, with the slightest hint of a diamond cut (barely detectable) and with the black printing of the design ever-so-slightly out of register (also extremely minor). The Mello-Mints advertisement on the back is boldly printed in green against a brilliant off-white background. This example features the legendary Ty Cobb leaning on his bat. While Ty Cobb was included in virtually every candy-card issue from the 1910 era, this yellow-background pose of Cobb is considered by many to be the single most attractive of the few Cobb caramel-card designs. The stock on which Mello-Mints are printed gives them particularly bright and bold colors compared to other cards of the era, adding to their great visual appeal. Caramel cards in general are rarely found in high grade, and this is especially so with Mello-Mints. This is a magnificent high-grade example of Ty Cobb from one of the most condition-sensitive pre-war candy-card issues. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $15,275
