"Jan's Inheritance" Collection: 1910-Era Tobacco-Card Collection (65 cards) Including Cobb and Two
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,231
This collection is entitled "Jan's Inheritance" because that was how it was referred to when Jan found the Full Count Vintage Baseball Card Forum online (http://vbbc.forumotion.com/forum.htm) and she was directed to consider contacting REA. (Thank you, VCCB Forum!) The title is certainly appropriate as Jan had, in fact, inherited this original 1910-era card collection from her aunt about thirty years ago. Jan didn't know anything about the cards other than, as she wrote to us, "My aunt thought I would like them because I've always collected other paper things. I suppose she collected them in her younger days." The cards have been stored away ever since, and out of the blue Jan decided to look into selling them in case they had value, letting someone else enjoy the small family collection of old-time baseball cards. It's always fun for us to know the history of a collection, especially when it can be traced back decades and generations. The collection does have some significant value and a few particularly noteworthy highlights. So, without further ado, we are honored to present this small original family collection, entitled "Jan's Inheritance."
Collection of sixty-three tobacco and two candy cards from the 1910 era consists of cards from five different highly regarded baseball issues, including an E95 Honus Wagner and a T206 Ty Cobb (red background), and a few other highlights and Hall of Famers. As noted above, the cards in this lot are an original-owner collection saved by the family for decades. We have selected three cards (two key highlights and a T210 Old Mill example) to be graded and encapsulated by SGC (E95 Wagner, T206 Cobb, T210 Maloney). 1) 1909-1911 T206 White Border (45 cards): Twenty-five cards range from Fair to Vg-Ex (averaging Gd-Vg), and twenty cards are Pr. Mostly Piedmont backs but also includes one Brown Hindu, six Old Mill, and two Sweet Caporal. Includes: Cobb/red (SGC FAIR 20. Well centered with a striking red background, flawless registration, evenly rounded corners, and a crease in the lower left corner. Downgraded from Vg due to a stain in the lower right corner and an ink mark in the center of the reverse), Evers/port. (Vg), Hooker/Southern Leaguer (Pr), Jennings/one hand (Vg, Old Mill), McGraw/finger (Pr, Old Mill back), McGraw/cap (Vg), Shreveport/Southern Leaguer (Pr), and Willis/bat (Pr). 2) 1910 T210 Old Mill Cigarettes Series 3 (17 cards): Eight cards range from Vg to Vg-Ex, and nine cards are Pr. Consists of the following: Alexander, Burk, Conaway, Deardorff, Donnelley, Doyle, Ens, Glawe, Hirsch, Hise, Hornsby, Maloney (SGC VG 40), McKay, Munsell, Northen, Powell, and Shontz. 3) 1911 T205 Gold Border (1 card): Bridwell (Pr). 4) 1910 E95 Philadelphia Caramel (1 card): Honus Wagner (SGC FAIR 20, great-looking card with perfect registration, a light crease on the lower right edge, pencil marks in the upper right corner, and even toning on the back). 5) 1910 E96 Philadelphia Caramel (1 card): Mordecai Brown (Fr-Gd). A fascinating and unusual collection of original 1910-era cards from several different issues and highlighted by legendary Hall of Famers Honus Wanger and Ty Cobb. Total 65 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000++. SOLD FOR $3,231
