1910-Era Sample Card Collection (5) Plus 1924 Mrs. Sherlock's Pin
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,763
Collection of five different unusual sample cards all dating from the 1910 era, representing four different issues, highlighted by Hall of Famers Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson, plus a 1924 Mrs. Sherlock's pin of Rabbit Maranville. Three cards have been graded by SGC, one graded by PSA, and one graded by GAI. 1) 1909 E92 Croft's Candy (2 cards): Barry (SGC VG 40, advertisement printed in blue on the back) and Christy Mathewson (SGC POOR 10, name misspelled as "Mattewson"). 2) 1910 E95 Handcut Advertising Card (1 card): Ty Cobb (GAI Authentic, hand cut otherwise in Poor condition). This is a very interesting and unusual rarity with a section of an advertisement on the reverse. The words "Chocolate" and "Jelly" are part of the text. It appears that this card was long ago cut from an advertising piece, of which no intact surviving example is known. E95 Philadelphia Caramel card design on front. 3) 1910 PC796 Sepia Postcard (1 card): Gibson (PSA EX 5). 4) 1912 Picture Postcard (1 card): Ty Cobb (SGC Authentic, small upper right section missing, which just touches the image area). Incredibly rare and unusual postcard. We have never seen this Cobb image on any other card. Reverse is postmarked Detroit, 1912. 5) 1924 Mrs. Sherlock's Pin (1 pin): Maranville (couple light scratches on the rounded edge, otherwise Nr/Mt). Fascinating small collection of rare cards from the 1910 era including Cobb and Mathewson plus one pin from the 1920s. Total 6 items (five cards and one pin). Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,763
