1886-1887 N172 Old Judge Jim McCormick (Portrait with Bowler Hat)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,406
Graded FAIR 20 by SGC. Striking example of this particularly rare and distinctive N172 portrait pose (with bowler hat) of star pitcher Jim McCormick, dressed in street clothes. This is an extremely rare card in the Old Judge set, as well as being an extremely unusual portrait card. McCormick was the first Scottish-born Major Leaguer; he played ten Major League seasons, and during his career he changed teams six times. While there is no team affiliation listed on this card, it very likely dates from late 1886 (or very early 1887) when he was with Chicago White Stockings of the National League. McCormick finished his career with the Pittsburgh Nationals in his final season in 1887. His lifetime won-loss record is an impressive 264-214. This card is bright and clean, with a flawless portrait image and just a hint of wear to the corners. It has been downgraded from Excellent only due to pencil writing and glue remnants on the reverse. This is a stunning and extremely rare N172 Old Judge pose of one of the nineteenth-century's great pitching stars. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $4,406
