1886 N370 Lone Jack Cigarettes Chris Von Der Ahe
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $6,463
Graded EX 5 (MK) by PSA. Only "1 of 1" graded by PSA with no other examples at any level graded by PSA. Exceedingly rare sample card of St. Louis Browns owner Chris Von Der Ahe from the Lone Jack Cigarettes series. The Lone Jack set, issued by the Lone Jack Cigarette Company of Lynchburg, Virginia, features portraits of the 1886 Brownie Champs. The thirteen-card set actually uses the very same portraits as appear in the N172 Old Judge Brownie Champ series, but cropped more closely, and with advertising for Lone Jack Cigarettes surrounding the players' portraits in the background. Their unusual design and great rarity distinguish them as one of the most interesting of all nineteenth-century baseball issues. Lone Jacks have a similarity to Old Judges, but have no direct connection to Goodwin, and may have been regionally issued only in Virginia. This is a very attractive example with the image a little light (the image quality on Lone Jack cards is usually a little weak). This card is crisp and clean, with square corners showing a hint of wear, and a very slight diamond cut. The pencil writing on the blank reverse, from long ago, is responsible for the “MK” qualifier assigned by PSA. Aside from a tiny surface chip on the lower left edge, the front of the card is virtually flawless. It is interesting to note that team owner Von Der Ahe’s name is misspelled as “Von De Ahe” on the front. Lone Jacks are so rare that a complete set has never been assembled. This is an extremely attractive sample from this very rare pre-1900 tobacco set. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000+. SOLD FOR $6,463
