1909-1911 T206 White Border Collection (345) Including O'Hara, St. Louis
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $7,050
Collection of 345 assorted 1909-1911 T206 White Borders (mostly different but includes quite a few duplicates) highlighted by eighteen Hall of Famers and eighteen scarce Southern Leaguers. Also included is a low-grade altered example of T206 rarity Bill O'Hara, St. Louis variation. 10% are Vg, 60% are lesser grades (mostly Fr-Gd) but are still great-looking cards, and 30% appear Vg or better (in many cases with an Excellent appearance) but have a slight trim. Keys: Beckley, Bender/no trees, Bender/trees, Bresnahan/bat, Brown/Chi. (2), Chase/pink, Chase/dark cap, Chase/white cap (2), Cicotte (“Black Sox”), Collins/Minn., Davis/Chi., Evers/portrait, Flick (2), Gandil (“Black Sox”), Jennings/one hand, Jennings/both hands, Mathewson/dark cap, McGraw/glove, O'Hara/St. Louis, Wallace (2), and Cy Young/bare hand. Southern Leaguers: Fritz, Greminger (2), Hart, Hooker, Lentz, Lipe, Manion, Miller, Revelle, Rockenfeld, Seitz, Smith (2), Thornton, Violat, and White (2). The O'Hara is a surprisingly clean card for a Polar Bear back card, with just a couple spots of light tobacco staining. The bottom border, however, has surface paper loss on the right side that has removed the original "Nat'l." and the notation "Nat" has been added by hand in ink following "St. Louis". The card is very clean, with bold colors, a crisp image, no creases, and is also extremely well centered. This card has superb eye-appeal and would grade very highly and be worth many thousands if it didn't have the extremely serious bottom border flaws. The card was submitted to PSA by the original owner; it did not receive a numerical grade and was returned as altered. This lot is ideal for the collector who wants original, authentic circa 1910 tobacco cards, which capture the spirit of the history of the game and collecting, but does not want to spend a fortune. This is a very substantial group. Backs almost all Sweet Caporal and Piedmont, but also included are a few Old Mill and Polar Bear. Total 345 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $7,050
