1909-1911 T206 Walter Johnson Rare "Red Hindu" Back

Starting Bid - $2,000, Sold For - $8,225

Addendum: While so faint it is almost impossible to detect any evidence of this, even when looking for it, the reverse of this card long ago had the letters ‘FC’ neatly written in blue crayon. We would never have been able to see any evidence of this if we were not sent images of the reverses of other cards from this same small collection with the crayon letters. Knowing exactly what to look for, we can tell this card was from this collection and had the crayon removed.

Graded EX 5 by PSA. Hands-at-chest pose of Hall of Fame pitcher Walter Johnson with the extremely rare Hindu Cigarettes (red print) advertisement on the back. This is easily one of the most extraordinary of all T206 front and rare advertising back combinations. Red Hindu backs are striking, unusual, and extremely rare. Even a sample of a common player is one of the most difficult to find of all T206 advertising backs. Examples featuring a key Hall of Famer such as Walter Johnson is almost unheard of, especially considering that the total checklist of confirmed T206 Red Hindu back examples to date is just forty-six different subjects. This is the first Red Hindu Walter Johnson that we have ever seen. This card was the highlight of an extraordinary T206 collection that is presented in this auction. Included in the collection are many higher-grade cards, including many PSA NM-MT 8 Hall of Famers, but of all the cards in the collection, assembled over a period of twenty years of dedicated T206 collecting, this was the standout favorite, due to its extraordinary front and rare back combination. The card has very strong eye appeal, both front and back, with no creases, bold color, and even wear to the corners. Centered 60/40 left to right. The Red Hindu print on the reverse is flawless and bold. This is an exceptional high-grade example of one of the rarest and most desirable T206 Hall of Famer front and rare advertising back combinations in existence. Reserve $2,000. Estimate $5,000+.
