1949 Superman Bubble Gum Display Box
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $17,625
Opened display box of Superman Bubble Gum, issued in 1949 by the Fo-Lee Gum Corp., of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, containing forty-eight wrapped pieces of gum (out of an original eighty). The box top features a die-cut illustration of Superman that could be displayed in an upright position for maximum counter visibility, while the bottom of the box features a large collectible Superman illustration (5 x 7.5 inches). The large Superman illustration was intended as a store prize, as noted by the manufacturer's instructions printed on the lid: "Mr. Retailer: The boy or girl purchasing the last piece of gum in this box is to be awarded the picture of Superman on the bottom of this display. Thanks for your cooperation. - Fo-Lee Gum Corp." A similar notice, addressed to patrons, appears on the front interior flap. A "1948" copyright appears on the front of the box, as does the handwritten date "1/19/49" (penned in vintage blue ink). The box (6 x 8.5 x 3 inches) has imperfections (including a torn front flap) but still has tremendous display value. The wrapped gum is in its original issued state. Together with its original cardboard shipping sleeve. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $17,625
