1937 Belga Magic Gum Box with 50 Unopened Packs
Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $705
Display box for Belga Magic Gum, issued by Belgian Chewing Gum LTD., consisting of fifty unopened packs of gum, plus two opened packs. Because this a European issue, very little is known about it. The fact that the back-panel display features printing in three different languages (American, French, and Dutch) indicates that it was produced for international distribution. The American text reads “Instructions for use inside each wrapper.” We have taken the liberty of opening two packs in order to view its contents and provide as much information about this issue as possible. While no “instructions” are found inside the wrapper, the pack consists of a piece of gum, a cardboard stiffener, and a transfer sheet (here, one features a boxing scene, the other a religious scene picturing a cross, a priest, and kneeling worshiper). The front of the wrapper pictures a boy blowing a bubble. Accompanying the box is a mailing envelope (10 x 6.5 inches) bearing the name and logo of the Droste company of Holland (a confectionary company). The date "2/8/37" is written on the side of the box in pencil. The counter-display box (10 x 7 x 2 inches) has imperfections (including tears and splits along the flap seams) but has outstanding display value. The fifty unopened packs are in virtually perfect condition. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $705
