Circa 1935 Around the World Chewing Gum Display Box and Window Display
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,880
Around the World Chewing Gum display box, issued (naturally) by the Around the World Gum Co., of Allston, Massachusetts, with 215 unopened sticks of gum and original store-window display. The colorful retail box features a standup back panel that displays illustrations of the many prizes that could be redeemed for gum wrappers. The text advises patrons to "Save The Wrappers - Each Has A Value." Five different wrappers were needed to complete a picture, respectively, of an "Indian, Scotchman, Eskimo, Chinaman, and Spaniard." Once a matched set of five wrappers was assembled, they could be redeemed for a designated prize, including a toy motor boat, pencil box, ring game, Wright Flyer, and lantern. The box offered patrons the choice to purchase sticks of gum either individually or in wrapped packs of five sticks. This near-complete box is comprised of 135 individual sticks, and sixteen wrapped packages of five, for a total of 215 sticks of gum. Also included are two opened sticks of gum, allowing us to see exactly how the partial images appeared on the interior of the wrappers. This box is accompanied by its original store-window display (10.5 x 8 inches). The display, which is identical in design to the box's back panel, is printed on thin paper stock and includes instructions to retailers on the reverse: "Notice To Dealers - If you want to increase your sales, put this strip in your window." The display box (11 x 9.5 x 1 inches) has imperfections (missing pieces and side panels split on the corners) but still has tremendous display value. Despite the flaws, the back panel, which is the most important piece visually, remains in Excellent to Mint condition, and all of the gum sticks are in spectacular Mint condition. The window display has a few minor border tears and light creases and is in Very Good condition overall, but presents as Excellent. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,880
