Circa 1935 "Thriller" Chewing Gum Pack Collection (10)
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,293
Collection of ten packs (nine unopened and one opened) of "Thriller" chewing gum, manufactured by the Anglo-American Chewing Gum LTD, of London. Two differently designed wrappers are featured here. Six wrappers picture a speeding motor car on the front; the other four display a burning plane hurtling downward. Through an examination of the opened example, we know that each pack contained one stick of gum and two cards: one card featuring a photo of an actor or actress (in this case Myrna Loy) and the other a full-color numbered "Picture Story" card illustrating a "thrilling" scene (here, "Kidnapped - No. 8" picturing a car stuck on the railroad tracks as a train approaches; captioned "A boy shouted 'The train!'"). We are not familiar with this particular issue, and it is not known if it was sold here in the United States, or if these few examples represent samples sent to the distributor for consideration. These packs are from a newly discovered extraordinary find of rare unopened 1930s nonsport cards from the sample storage shelves of an old candy and gum distributor, all of which are offered in this auction. The packs measure 3.25 x 2.5 inches and look exactly as they did in the 1930s. Total: 10 packs. Reserve $500. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,293
