1933 R155 General Gum "Mystery Gum - Trick Cards" Original Display Box with 88 Unopened Packs

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $26,438

Now is an appropriate time to clear up a long-standing, obscure hobby mystery relating to the identification of this issue as "Trick Cards." This identification was assigned to this set in early hobby publications, and has continued to be used because no wrapper or box was ever discovered to confirm otherwise. Well the mystery is solved! Offered is an extremely rare nonsport display box issued by the General Gum Co., ironically entitled "Mystery Gum," from circa 1933, with eighty-eight original unopened one-cent wax packs. This box originally held 100 one-cent wax packs. The eighty-eight packs have been stored untouched in the original display box since the 1930s. Each pack contains one magic trick card for a total of 88 cards. Each illustrated card in the set explains in detail exactly how to do a magic trick. The wrapper states "You can mystify your friends and be the life of the party with Mystery Gum Tricks" and encourages youngsters to "get the complete set." Packs are all unopened, in the original display box (bottom of box only), in essentially perfect condition, with only normal packing and storage wear. (Sometimes in the manufacturer's packaging process a pack can have a tiny corner tear or minor imperfection.) The display box has imperfections (side panel split in the center and on one corner) but displays beautifully. It is extremely rare to find complete or near-complete boxes of any 1930s nonsport cards in original unopened form. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $26,438
