Circa 1934 Mazuma Gum Display Box
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,175
Circa 1934 Mazuma Gum display box, issued by the American Chicle Company (New York-Chicago-San Francisco), containing eighty-five individual packages of gum (out of an original 100), each of which also contains one piece of plastic "play money." Each package of gum is itself a small box measuring 2 x 1.5 x .25 inches. The Mizuma "play money" contained in each package is comprised of a single coin, of varying dimensions, featuring the likeness of a famous American. The one box we opened to photograph for a catalog illustration contained a "coin" (with a denomination of "10") featuring Buffalo Bill, along with three pieces of gum. An illustration of a coin featuring John Paul Jones appears on each box. The fact that this issue features "Play Money In Each Package" is duly noted both on the lid of the display box and on each individual package. The price of each package of gum, one-cent, is also printed on the box top. All of the individual boxes are in Mint condition. The counter-display box (8 x 7 x 2 inches) has imperfections (including two tears on the lid) but still has tremendous display value. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,175
