1955 Bowman "Magic Pictures" and 1964 A. & B.C. "Top Stars" Wax Boxes (2)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,058
Extremely unusual pair of unopened nonsport boxes, from 1955 and circa 1964, respectively. Packs are all unopened, in original display boxes, in Excellent or better condition, lightly handled, and with only normal packing and storage wear, if at all. (Sometimes in the manufacturer's packaging process a pack can have a tiny corner tear or minor imperfection.) Includes the following: 1) 1955 Bowman "Magic Pictures" (partial box of 110 packs out of 120). Each pack contains two cards (and a plastic lens as well as a piece of gum) for a total of 220 cards. With the lens one could view the images on the cards and they presented a fascinating interactive visual effect. Apparently the concept was not very successful, but Bowman can be given credit for attempting to be innovative to the very end. This was one of the last sets ever issued by Bowman. The Magic Pictures set is catalogued R701-8. The display box has imperfections (lid detached and side panels split on three corners). It is extremely rare to find complete or near-complete boxes of any Bowman products in original unopened form. 2) Circa 1964 A. & B.C. "Top Stars" (partial box of 34 packs out of 36). In the box are thirty-four never-opened two-card cello packs. The cards picture bands such as the Beatles, Freddie and the Dreamers, The Searchers, and Gerry and the Pacemakers. The display box shows a little natural shelfwear and splits on three corners, but is still in Excellent condition. This is a very substantial issue that is not on the radar of most collectors, featuring many great bands and dating from a particularly exciting time in the history of popular music. Total 2 boxes representing 144 unopened packs. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $1,058
