1938 R69 Gum, Inc. "Horrors of War" #3 PSA NM-MT 8
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $5,288
Graded NM-MT 8 by PSA. One of the two highest-graded examples! Outstanding high-grade example of 1938 "Horrors of War" bubble-gum card #3, entitled “U.S. Marine Shot While Aiding Americans," issued by Gum, Inc. The detailed image pictures U.S. Marine Private Julius F. Flizar helping civilians to safety outside the U.S. Embassy; while doing so, he is struck in the leg by a bullet. The card is centered slightly to the left, with four sharp corners, perfect registry, flawless colors, and a clean reverse. This is exactly the type of horrifying image that many parents felt was inappropriate to market to youngsters in a historical bubble-gum card set. This is a particularly difficult to find card in high grade as card #3 is such a low number that it naturally tended to gravitate to the top of stacks of cards, and was therefore naturally subject to extra wear. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $5,288
