1938 R69 Gum, Inc. "Horrors of War" #199 PSA NM-MT+ 8.5

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $705

Graded NM-MT+ 8.5 by PSA. Highest-graded example! Extraordinary ultra-high grade 1938 "Horrors of War" bubble-gum card #199, entitled “Japanese Are Blasted at Yihsien," issued by Gum, Inc. The detailed artwork on this card is a typically gruesome war scene, featuring bloody Japanese soldiers lying dead during a Chinese army assault. The back of the card explains that "a Chinese army made a determined assault on the Jap-held Yihsien, in Shantung Province, with artillery, bombing planes, and infantry on April 16, 1938.” This is exactly the type of horrifying image and text that parents cited as inappropriate to market to youngsters in a bubble-gum card set, and which made the set so controversial. The card has brilliant colors with four razor-sharp corners and perfect centering. This is an extremely high grade 1938 "Horrors of War" card, the highest-graded example. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+. SOLD FOR $705
