1936 R60 Gum, Inc. "G-Men & Heroes of the Law" Complete Set: #2 PSA Registry!

Starting Bid - $2,500, Sold For - $7,050

Presented is one of the finest complete sets of 1936 "G-Men & Heroes of the Law" bubble-gum cards ever assembled. This is the number-two current finest set on the PSA registry. The PSA set registry GPA of 4.77 is extraordinary for this condition-sensitive set. Gum, Inc's "G-Men & Heroes of the Law" is one of nonsport-card collecting's all-time classic sets, presenting exciting "official stories" about "G-Men and Famous Police Organizations and Heroes of the Law." One thing the 1930s had plenty to offer was exciting gangster stories. These cards chronicle law enforcement adventures in an era that glamorized, at times, both the representatives of law enforcement and the criminals as well. In the world of card collecting, "G-Men" (as the set is often referred to) has always been a very special set. This ultra high-grade set has been assembled one card at a time by an extremely dedicated collector with an uncompromising commitment to condition and eye-appeal over many years, actively seeking to upgrade this set during the entire span of his collecting. We have only seen one other G-Men set (which we sold for $22,325 in REA's 2007 auction and at that time was the second-highest set on the registry) that even came close to the extraordinary results of these great efforts. Advanced collectors are well aware that G-Men cards are far more difficult to collect in high grade than baseball cards of the era, in part because they are far rarer. Gum, Inc.'s 1936 "G-Men & Heroes of the Law" series is one of the most popular nonsport sets ever issued. Its outstanding color, detailed artwork, popular subject matter, and the exciting adventures presented on the backs, all contribute to making this set one of nonsport-collecting's all-time classics. A complete set of G-Men is rare in any condition, let alone a set of such exceptional high quality. The entire set of 168 cards has been graded and encapsulated by PSA. 110 cards range in grade from Ex to Mint, and fifty-eight cards are Vg-Ex and slightly lesser. The complete PSA condition composite follows: One MINT 9 (OC): #67. One NM-MT 8 (OC): #158. Three NM 7: #81 (OC), 136 (Semi-Rare), and 277. Thirty-four EX-MT 6: #25, 33, 39, 51, 56, 57 (Rare), 58, 59, 60, 63, 75, 79, 86, 92, 97, 101, 103, 109, 117, 125, 126, 129 (MC), 131, 132, 149 (Semi-Rare), 155, 169 (Semi-Rare), 210, 214, 242, 279, 319 (MC), 397, and 405. Twenty (12% of the set) of these cards are the highest- or second-highest graded examples in the PSA Population Report. This is a remarkable set. Very few complete sets have been assembled in any condition, but the assembly of a set of this caliber is particularly extraordinary. One of only three completely PSA-graded R60 G-Men sets that we have known of to have ever been assembled, this is a world-class set of one of the most popular and rarely offered of all 1930s gum-card sets. Total 168 cards. Reserve $2,500. Estimate $5,000/$10,000. SOLD FOR $7,050
