1894 N142 Duke Cabinet Cyclists Complete Set (3)
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $2,938
Three rare 1894 N142 Duke Cabinets, each graded and encapsulated by SGC: John S. Johnson (GOOD 30), W. S. Sanger (FAIR 20), and A. A. Zimmerman (GOOD 30). All three cards have been downgraded by SGC primarily due to having the initials (apparently of the original owner) “J. C. M.” neatly written in small letters at the top of the blank backs; otherwise two are in Vg-Ex condition, and the third is Vg. Collectors are very familiar with the N142 Baseball Players, as these are among the most highly prized and valuable of all baseball tobacco cabinets, but the three Cyclists, which are a part of the same series, are just as rare. Duke cabinet cards, which advertise Duke's Honest Tobacco brand in the lower left, are among the most impressive and desirable of all pre-1900 issues. They are one of the few full-color pre-1900 issues, and the only full color pre-1900 cabinet-card issue. Each Duke cabinet measures 6 x 9 inches, making this set one of the largest and most impressive of all cabinet-card issues. These three striking cards represent the complete set of all cyclists in the N142 Duke Cabinet set. Total 3 cabinets. Reserve $300. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $2,938
