Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $5,875

Near-complete set of fifty 1888 N15 Duke "Great Generals” cards (missing just Stuart for completion), all graded and encapsulated by SGC. This is a very strong set of these extremely striking nineteenth-century tobacco cards with thirty-three cards ranging from Vg-Ex to Nr/Mt, eight are Vg, and eight slightly lesser (mostly Good). The complete SGC condition composite follows: One NM 84: Napier. Two EX/NM 80: McClellan and Soult. Three EX+ 70: Havelock, Lafayette, and Logan. Fourteen EX 60: Crook, Custer, Grant, Hampton, Longstreet, Meade, Napoleon, Ney, Putnam, Scott, Stewart, Thomas, Wellington, and Wolseley. Thirteen VG/EX 50: Blucher, Cornwallis, Frederick the Great, Gordon, Hancock, Hannibal, Harrison, Johnston, Lee, MacMahon, Pulaski, Sherman, and Wolfe. Eight VG 40: Burgoyne, Caesar, Cromwell, Fremont, Halleck, A. Jackson, Skobeleff, and Von Moltke. Five GOOD 30: Beauregard, Boulanger, "Stonewall" Jackson, Washington, and Worth. One FAIR 20: Sheridan. Two Authentic: Garibaldi and Kosciusko. Issued with Allen & Ginter's Cigarettes, the set is entitled "Great Generals," and as the set title implies, these cards feature great Generals from all walks of life. Each insert card measures 2.75 x 1.5 inches and features a portrait image of a historical figure (such as George Washington, US Grant, Robert E. Lee, Napoleon Bonaparte, Julius Caesar, etc.) on the front with a checklist presented on the reverses. This is an extremely attractive set with outstanding eye-appeal. Allen & Ginter's "Great Generals" are rarely offered as a complete set, and are highly prized by both historical collectors and nineteenth-century nonsport tobacco-card collectors. Total 49 cards. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $5,875
