1979-1985 Magic Johnson Los Angeles Lakers Signed Game-Used Home Jersey

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,113

Magic Johnson Los Angeles Lakers home jersey dating from the seven-year period 1979-1985. Graded A7 by MEARS. Authentic Magic Johnson game-used jerseys are extremely rare and this is the first we have ever offered. This is one of only five Magic Johnson Los Angeles Lakers jerseys listed in the MEARS census and it ranks as the second highest-graded example; only one graded at this level, with only one graded higher (A8). Also important to note is that this is the earliest Magic Johnson jersey ever graded by MEARS (all of the other jerseys date between the years 1988 and 1996). The gold mesh jersey is lettered "Lakers" across the front and features the number "32" on the front and reverse. "Johnson" is lettered on the reverse above the number. All letters and numerals are appliquèd in purple on white tackle twill. A "Tiernan" label appears on the base of the front tail. The black-marker signature on the front and reverse of the jersey has been presented to but not authenticated by James Spence/JSA because the experts there were not sufficiently comfortable with the signature. In the interest of full disclosure we feel it is important to state that we are presenting the signature as not authenticated, but at the same time our common sense tells us that it is unlikely that anyone would intentionally add a secretarial or forged signature to this jersey which is an unequivocally authentic Magic Johnson game jersey. (Important Note: JSA looks only at the signature when assessing an item such as this. The fact that this is an authentic game-used jersey is by design not taken into account and has no bearing.) Original and unaltered, the jersey displays heavy wear throughout. Ervin "Magic" Johnson is considered by many to be the greatest point guard in NBA history. A three-time League MVP, Johnson led the Lakers to nine NBA Finals and five World Championships during his fourteen seasons. Included among his many honors are twelve All-Star Game selections, three NBA Finals MVP Awards, ten All-NBA First or Second Team selections, and election to the Basketball Hall of Fame. Johnson was also a member of the legendary 1992 Olympic USA "Dream Team" and in 1996 was named one of the 50 Greatest Players in NBA History. Due to the significance of this jersey, and the abundance of valuable information available, MEARS has provided a special additional two-page LOA in addition to its standard one-page LOA. In the two-page LOA (which can be viewed on our website) MEARS goes into great detail with regard to dating and comparison to other known authentic Johnson jerseys. The section on condition is of special importance because it explains that the deduction of all three points from the final grade is due to "several visible condition issues not commonly associated with game worn basketball jerseys that can not be classified as game wear." These condition problems (a number of barely-detectable small holes and surface abrasions found by MEARS under close examination) are not only extremely minor, they do have an explanation: they are simply the the result of the Jersey being mounting for framing. (In fact, REA had to remove the jersey from the frame for the consignor). The three points deducted are solely due to the mounting for framing; it would otherwise have been graded A10 by MEARS. Graded A7 by MEARS (10 point base grade, with 3 points deducted for condition anomalies due to framing). Any Magic Johnson game-used jersey is rare. The fact that this jersey also dates to the early portion of Magic's career, possibly even to his rookie season, adds to its significance as a particularly exceptional Magic Johnson jersey. LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$3,000. SOLD FOR $4,113
