1985 "Rookie Era" Michael Jordan Signed Chicago Bulls Sneakers
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $4,700
Pair of Nike "Air Jordan" sneakers produced exclusively for use by Michael Jordan as a member of the Chicago Bulls. While this extremely rare pair of Jordan sneakers naturally has great significance as an important Michael Jordan memorabilia item, it actually has an even greater significance, as a symbol of both Michael Jordan's on-the-court prowess and, as a direct result, the phenomenal power of his name to sell a product. These are the sneakers that launched the Nike shoe empire and, literally, an entire industry. The white sneakers, with red and black trim, feature the inventory code "850102 TYPS" stamped in white along the interior of each shoe. That inventory code indicates that these sneakers were produced in January, 1985, which was the second half of Jordan's 1984-1985 rookie season. Jordan has signed each shoe in black ink (grading "7") along the outer side of the heel. As was Jordan's custom, especially early in his career, these shoes do not match in size. The right shoe is size "13 1/2" and the left is size "13." It is fascinating to note that this ideal pair is mismatched in this unusual manner, exactly as Jordan historians have documented to be his preference for his on-court footwear during this period. Based upon detailed photo analysis of Jordan's footwear over the years, this particular sneaker style was worn by Jordan in 1985 and 1986. Because of the early 1985 production date of these sneakers, it is likely, but not absolutely certain, that they were issued to Jordan during the second half of his rookie season with the Bulls. It is also possible that they were issued to him at the start of his sophomore campaign in the fall of 1985. Michael Jordan's shoe contract with Nike was a watershed event in the history of sports marketing and helped Nike become the leading manufacturer of basketball sneakers in the world. The Air Jordan basketball shoes were a national phenomenon at the time of their debut and quickly became a status symbol among teenagers, all of whom wanted to "be like Mike." This is an extraordinary pair of Michael Jordan sneakers in all respects and the earliest example we have ever seen or offered. They are also only the second signed pair of authentic Michael Jordan sneakers we have handled. The shoes display moderate wear with light toning. LOAs from Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000/$4,000. SOLD FOR $4,700
