1974 Julius Erving New York Nets ABA World Championship Salesman's-Sample Ring

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,528

Addendum: Please note that the diamond in this ring, as is the case with all 1974 Erving salesman-sample rings, is a CZ. The ring size is approximately 11.5.

This 1974 New York Nets ABA World Championship salesman's-sample ring is not only rare, but highly desirable due to the fact that it is a replica of the very one issued to the League's greatest star, Julius Erving. The 10K gold ring features a single CZ diamond set within the center of an elegantly designed likeness of the League's trademark red-white-and-blue basketball. The ring's bezel reads "World Champions - ABA - NY Nets." The left shank displays the name "Erving," along with the Nets logo and the ABA logo. The right shank displays the year, "1974," and shield pattern bearing the engraved results of each round of the playoffs: "Nets 4 - Squires 1," "Nets 4 - Colonels 0," and "Nets/Stars - 111-100 - 4-1." The notations "10k" and "7223 0" (production number) are engraved on the interior band. There are a few other illegible markings on the interior band that are most likely identifiers for the manufacturer (possibly Balfour). Led by the incomparable "Dr. J.," the New York Nets captured their only ABA World Championship in 1974. Erving led the League in scoring with 2,299 points and 27.4 points per game in 1973-1974. Those numbers, combined with the success of the team, earned Erving his first of three consecutive ABA MVP Awards at season's end. Erving later enjoyed a highly successful NBA career and is considered one of the greatest players in the history of the sport. Salesman's-sample rings are rare because they are a seriously expensive sales tool which, understandably, are not given away as promotional gifts. They are very popular with collectors when available, and represent a relatively affordable alternative to the virtually identical rings owned by the players, which would be many times more expensive if available. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $1,528
