1992 John Elway Denver Broncos Signed Home Jersey
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,880
John Elway Denver Broncos home jersey dating to the 1992 season. Graded A8 by MEARS. The orange jersey (combining a number of materials, including mesh) features the number "7" on the front, reverse, and each sleeve. "Elway" is lettered on the reverse directly above the number. All numbers are appliquéd by means of a heat-transfer process. All letters are appliquéd in white tackle twill. A handwarmer has been added to the front of the jersey, as has an extended crotch piece along the base of tail. A "Wilson" label appears on the left front base of the crotch piece, as does a flag tag bearing the size ("44") and a year code ("FY"). Elway has signed the jersey in faded blue marker (grading "3") on the reverse number. Despite the absence of a year tag, MEARS has dated the jersey precisely to the 1992 season based upon a number of verifiable style aspects that are detailed in its accompanying letter. This jersey also happens to have a unique provenance, as it originates from former NFL player John Alt, who was a member of the Kansas City Chiefs from 1984 to 1996. Elway and Alt would have seen a lot of each other over that period, as they played in the same division and faced each other twice a year. Obviously they had mutual respect for each other, as evidenced by the fact that Elway later presented this jersey to him sometime after the 1993 season. Aside from the added handwarmer and crotch piece, the jersey is all original. Moderate wear is displayed throughout including a few minor tears and contact marks on the numbers. Despite all of the positive attributes this jersey possesses, it does display two anomalies which MEARS addresses in detail in an addendum to its standard LOA. It is believed that both the handwarmer and crotch piece were added to the jersey after the 1992 season, at which point it may have been used as a backup jersey for Elway. Also, the "FY" year code on the flag tag applied to the crotch piece indicates "1993," which supports the theory that both the handwarmer and crotch piece were added that year. The entire MEARS LOA can be viewed on our website, but its conclusion reads in full: Based on the fact that the shell was most consistent with the 1992 season due to the placement of the Wilson sleeve logo (left sleeve), provenance states the jersey came from John Alt of the Kansas City Chiefs, and a complete evaluation of size, body shell, numerals, etc, MEARS is confident this jersey was most likely originally worn during the 1992 season. After the season, the crotch piece and handwarmer were added for use during 1993. Photos of cold weather games do not support this jersey being worn again during the 1993 season, and was most likely dedicated to back up status. After John Alt's request, the jersey was given to him. Final Grade: Jersey was assigned 10-start point as the jersey was the proper manufacturer, style, game use, and provenance. 2 points were subtracted due to the handwarmer being added for the second season, yet the jersey did not see any actual game use with the modification. If the additional modification of the crotch piece and handwarmers would have been documentable, the jersey would not have had the points deducted. This is one of ten John Elway jerseys listed in the MEARS census. None others are graded at this level, with only three graded higher. LOAs from Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,880
