1979 Pittsburgh Steelers Super Bowl Commemorative Trophy
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,058
This replica trophy, which is a smaller version of the official Super Bowl Trophy presented to the winning team, was issued in 1979 and commemorates the Pittsburgh Steelers' first four Super Bowl victories. The metal stanchion features a plaque designed in the shape of the official NFL logo and is engraved "Vince Lombardi Trophy - AFC vs NFC - Super Bowl XI - Super Bowl X - Super Bowl XIII - Super Bowl XIV." A plaque affixed to the base reads "Pittsburgh Steelers - Four Time - World Champions." The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the greatest franchises in football history and one of only three teams to win five Super Bowls (Dallas and San Francisco are the others). It is not known how many of these smaller Pittsburgh Steelers commemorative trophies were produced, or by whom, but we have seen a few other examples (with slightly differing designs and engravings) over the years. This trophy has the presence of an extraordinary work of art, and is an exceptional display piece that was obviously produced at great expense. We suspect these were distributed in extremely small numbers (perhaps as gifts from the team to dignitaries or created for sale as a special keepsake of the season) as we have seen only few similar examples. The trophy displays light wear, including a few tiny nicks on the front of the stanchion, minor tarnishing, and a small area of adhesive residue on the side of the base. Excellent to Mint condition. Height: 18 inches. Weight: 11 pounds. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,058
