1959 Bazooka Football Near-Complete Set (14 of 18)
Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $3,525
This very rarely offered and exceptionally high grade near-complete set of 1959 Bazooka Football consists of fourteen different of the eighteen cards in the set, including Hall of Famers Jim Brown and Frank Gifford. Missing only the following four cards for completion: Conerly, Groza, Tracy, and Unitas. This set is in extraordinary condition. While some cards are cut more perfectly than others as always is the case with package-design issues, this set is cut remarkably well across the board and is easily one of the finest groups of cards from this rare Football issue we have ever seen. Keys: Jim Brown (Ex-Mt), Frank Gifford (Ex-Mt), Bobby Layne (Ex-Mt), Ollie Matson (Ex-Mt), Joe Perry (Ex-Mt), and Y. A. Tittle (Ex-Mt). The eight remaining cards range from Ex-Mt to Nr/Mt. The 1959 Bazooka Football set has always been revered as one of the rarest and most difficult to collect of all Topps-related sets. Issued just one card per box of Topps Bazooka-brand bubble gum, the cards were intended to be hand cut by youngsters from the bottom of Bazooka boxes. You had to buy an entire box of gum to get just one card. While PSA does encapsulate and grade 1959 Bazookas, because they were hand-cut package-design cards, highly graded examples are almost impossible to get because the quality of the cut is a major factor taken into consideration. If the dotted line has been compromised anywhere on the card, which is usually the case, the technical grade is seriously affected or the card is encapsulated as "Authentic." Of the seventy-four 1959 Bazooka Football cards encapsulated by PSA to date, sixty-one of them have not been numerically graded, and have been encapsulated as "Authentic." Most of the cards in this set have the dotted lines still visible, but based upon our experience getting 1959 Bazookas graded (most come back "Authentic") and the PSA population report data, we do want to make clear that the grades listed above are without reference to cutting issues. We grade this near-set EX-MT to NR-MT. This is a gorgeous super high-grade near-set of this rare and important football issue. From the Charlie Conlon Collection. Total 14 cards. Reserve $1,000. Estimate $2,000++. SOLD FOR $3,525
