1953 Detroit Lions World Champions Team-Signed Football

Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $823

Wilson official "Intercollegiate WRWB" football signed in blue ink by the following thirty-four members of the 1953 World Champion Detroit Lions: Ane, Banonis, Bingaman, Box, Cain, Christiansen, Cline, David, Dibble, Doran, Dublinski, Forte (coach), Gedman, Girard, Hart, Hoernschemeyer (red ink), Karilivacz, Lary, Layne, Martin, McGraw, Miller, Parker (head coach), Prchlik, Ramsey (coach), Schmidt, Sewell, B. Smith, B. Smith, Spencer, Stanfel, Torgeson, Walker, and one other (illegible). Signatures range from "6" to "9," averaging "8," with the exception of Hoernschemeyer ("4"). The 1950s Detroit Lions were one of football's most storied dynasties. Led by Hall of Fame quarterback Bobby Layne, the Lions captured three World Championships during the decade including consecutive titles in 1952 and 1953 (the other title came in 1957). The 1953 championship game was particularly thrilling, as Layne rallied the club in the closing minutes with a dramatic eighty-yard touchdown drive. Trailing the Cleveland Browns by six points with just over four minutes to play, Layne completed four of six passes, including the thirty-three yard game-winnng strike to Jim Doran, to give the Lions the 17-16 victory. 1950s-era team-signed footballs are rare, and this example, dating from one of the Lions' most memorable Championship seasons, is especially desirable. The white football is moderately soiled and displays heavy wear. In Very Good condition overall. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $823
