Vintage 1940s Celebrity Autograph Collection with Chaplin, Jolson, Crosby, Grant, Powell, Burns, Allen, Abbot & Costello, Raft, Brice, Morgan, et al.

Starting Bid - $400, Sold For - $2,350

This outstanding 1940s Hollywood autograph collection is particularly noteworthy due both to its content and its impeccable provenance. The signatures presented here were originally obtained by actress Marion Sayers and have been consigned directly to this auction by the Sayers family. Marion Sayers was a former Miss Florida who starred in a number of Mack Sennett comedy shorts during the 1930s, including I Surrender Dear, with Bing Crosby. The highlight of the collection is a vintage leather-bound autograph album (6.25 x 5 inches) that was compiled by Sayers as a gift to her sister Gloria. Sayers has inscribed the book on the interior back cover, "To my darling little sister with all my love. Please keep this always, you have many fine autographs, and I've really worked acquiring them. Your sister, Marion - Nov 1942." Sayers was obviously well connected in her field, as evidenced by the seventy-four signatures in this book, which reads like a "who's who" in Hollywood at the time. Nearly all of the stars have prefaced their signature with the salutation "To Gloria," and many have also added a few additional kind words. The vast majority of signatures appear individually on a single sheet, but a few pages feature more than one signature. All of the signatures (penned in a variety of inks, including some in pencil) grade "9" or "10." SINGLE-PAGE SIGNATURES: Tex Ritter, Antonio Moreno, Basil Rathbone, Rudy Vallee, Hal Roach, Randolph Scott, Maxie Rosenbloom, Marie Wilson, Jack Mulhall, Charles Ray, Franklyn Farnum, Philo McCullough, George Raft, Edmund Lowe, Lee Tracy, Milton Berle, Robert Barrat, Andy Tombes, Bud Abbot, Lew Pollack, Frank Morgan, Bill Gargan, John Conte, Victor McLaglen, Dolly Tree, Rex Ford, William Powell, Sally Eilers, Donald MacBride, Richard Carlson, Lou Costello, Cary Grant, Fanny Brice (on the reverse of the Cary Grant signed page), Jimmy Dunn, Dudley Nichols, Victor Moore, Chef Milani, George Stone, Betty Grable, Al Jolson (on the reverse of the Betty Grable signed page), Harry James, Ted Lewis, Thomas Mitchell (on the reverse of the Ted Lewis page), John Decker (famous artist, includes a self portrait on the page), George Jessel, Robert Benchley (member of the Algonquin Round Table), Charlie Butterworth, Chester Morris, Sir Cedric Hardwicke (on the reverse of the Chester Morris page), Gregory Ratoff, Damon Runyon, Katina Paxinov, Dudley Malone, Monty Wooley, Ben Lyon, John Sutton, Louella Parsons, Arline Judge, Betty Hutton, Lloyd Nolan, Phil Regan, and John Loder. MULTISIGNED PAGES: 1) George Burns and Gracie Allen. 2) Charlie Butterworth and T. Netcher. 3) The Ritz Brothers (Al, Jimmy, and Harry). 4) Pat O'Brien, Spencer Tracy, Frank Mchugh, and Frank Morgan. The album is in Excellent condition and the interior pages are Near Mint. ADDITIONAL ITEMS: 1-10) a number of smaller, loose autograph sheets (not from the aforementioned album) or similar sized pieces of paper signed by Charlie Chaplin (Chaplin has added a drawing of his "Little Tramp" character), Carole Landis, Una Merkel (on a sheet with two other unidentified individuals, Buddy Clarke ("7"), Irene Dunne (on her calling card), Alice Faye, John Conte, Richard Watts Jr. (theater critic), Milton Berle (larger sheet), and Jack Dempsey (reverse of a torn postcard). The Chaplin, Dunne, and Conte pieces are in Excellent condition, while the remainder are in Good to Very Good condition. Sizes range from 3.5 x 2.5 inches to 6 x 5.5 inches. 11-12) Two identical Bing Crosby signed 8 x 10-inch sepia photos. One is inscribed "To Marion - My ex- leading lady," while the other is signed to her parents "Mr. and Mrs. Sayers." Both photos are in Fair condition. 13) A portion of an autograph album containing the signatures of ten individuals, nearly all of whom were important early aviators. This second album was not compiled by Marion Sayers, but by another family member of our consignor. The most prominent of the ten signatures featured in the book are those of Amelia Earhart, Wiley Post, James Doolittle (ideally, the signatures of Post and Doolittle appear together on the same page) and Laura Ingalls (author of Little House on the Prairie). The remaining signatures include Frances Marsalis and Ruth Nichols. All of the signatures have been scripted on a separate piece of paper (some pieces feature more than one signature) and affixed to the album sheet with the exception of Ingalls. Ex. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $400. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $2,350
