1999 Ken Griffey Jr. Seattle Mariners Alternate Jersey
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $1,293
Ken Griffey Jr. Seattle Mariners road jersey dating from his final season with the club in 1999. The blue knit jersey is lettered “Seattle” across the front and features the number “24” on the reverse. “Griffey” is lettered on the reverse above the number. All front letters are appliquéd in tricolor tackle twill (silver/black/teal); all reverse letters and numerals are appliquéd in silver on teal tackle twill. A Seattle Mariners team patch appears on the left sleeve. Situated on the left front tail are a “Russell Athletic 48” label, and an adjacent “1999” year tag. Original and unaltered, the jersey displays light wear, which, as MEARS notes in its accompanying LOA, is “possibly due to Griffey marketing his own game-used items during his time with the Mariners.” Ken Griffey Jr. is one of the most prolific sluggers in baseball history and one of only six players to hit 600 or more home runs in his career. His home-run total, combined with his ten Gold Glove Awards, 1997 MVP Award, and thirteen All-Star Game appearances all but guarantee him a spot in Cooperstown following his retirement. Griffey enjoyed another banner season in 1997, his last with the Mariners, finishing the year with a League-leading 48 home runs, 134 RBI, and a .285 average. Graded A5 by MEARS (no post-1987 jersey can achieve a higher grade than A5 without additional provenance). This jersey has been consigned to this auction directly from the personal collection/inventory of world-renowned bat and jersey authenticator Troy Kinunen. LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $200. Estimate $400+. SOLD FOR $1,293
