1985 Keith Hernandez New York Mets Signed Road Jersey

Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $1,880

New York Mets road jersey worn by former National League MVP and perennial Gold Glove Award winner Keith Hernandez in 1985. Graded A10 by MEARS. This is one of only four authentic 1985 New York Mets jerseys listed in the MEARS population report. It is also only the fifth Keith Hernandez jersey for all years and teams listed in the entire MEARS population report. The gray knit jersey is lettered "Mets" across the front and features the number "17" on both the left breast and reverse. "Hernandez" is lettered on the reverse above the number. All letters and numerals are appliquéd in blue on orange tackle twill. The number, size, and set number ("17 42 1") of the jersey are embroidered in blue upon a grey strip tag in the collar. Also located in the collar, directly above the strip tag, are a "Rawlings 42" label and a flag tag reading "Set 1 1985." Hernandez has signed the jersey in blue Sharpie (grading "8/9") directly below the front number. The jersey is completely original, with no alterations, and displays moderate wear throughout. Keith Hernandez is considered by many to be the greatest defensive first baseman in history and was the recipient of eleven consecutive Gold Glove Awards between the years 1978 and 1988 (a record for a first baseman). He was also an outstanding hitter and finished his career with a .296 average, 162 home runs, and 1,071 RBI. 1985 marked another banner season for Hernandez, as he batted .309 with 10 home runs and 91 RBI while also leading the League in fielding percentage at his position. Graded A10 by MEARS. The only other Keith Hernandez jersey presented by REA in the past was from the 1986 championship season; that jersey appeared as lot 1406 in the May 2008 auction and sold for $4,406. LOAs from Troy Kinunen/MEARS and James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$1,500+. SOLD FOR $1,880
