1978 Carl Yastrzemski Boston Red Sox Game-Used Home Jersey
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $823
Addendum: Recent research by MEARS, highly respected jersey collector and historian Lon Lewis, and others regarding 1974-1979 McAuliffe jerseys strongly suggests that Boston and A's jerseys with no blue border surrounding the McAulliffe tag (as is the case with this jersey) could have been custom-ordered by the public, and can be indistinguishable from jerseys worn by players. Therefore, if this is the case (which is not certain, but is an ongoing area of research on the gameuseduniverse.com message boards and by MEARS), it would be possible that a jersey from these teams and specific years with borderless tags could appear in all respects to be a game-used jersey, and in fact be a special custom-ordered jersey that was not worn by the player.

Boston Red Sox home jersey worn by Hall of Fame outfielder Carl Yastrzemski during the 1978 season. Graded a perfect A10 by MEARS. The white knit jersey is lettered "Red Sox" across the front and features the number "8" on the reverse. All letters and numerals are appliquèd in red on navy tackle twill. Both a ‘McAuliffe’ label and a ‘44’ size tage are located in the collar. The name ‘Yaz’ is written in black marker on the size tag. Situated on the front tail are a ‘1978’ year tag and a laundry tag. The jersey is original and unaltered, displaying moderate wear throughout. Carl Yazstremski was one of the greatest players in franchise history and one of only a few players in history to amass over 400 home runs and 3,000 hits. Numbered among his many other individual accomplishments and awards are three batting titles, a home run title, a Triple Crown, an MVP Award, and seven Gold Glove Awards. Today, his number ‘8’ is among the few ever retired by the Red Sox. 1978 was a bitter year for Yastrzemski and the Red Sox. Boston led the division by as many as fourteen games at one point, but a late season collapse allowed the Yankees to mount a furious comeback and the two clubs ended up tied for first at the end of the regular season. In a thrilling one-game playoff, held at Fenway Park, the Red Sox lost to the Yankees by the score of 5-4. The Red Sox staged one final rally in the bottom of the ninth that culminated in a showdown between two future Hall of Famers: Yankees relief ace Goose Gossage vs. Carl Yastrzemski. With two on and runners in scoring position, Gossage got Yaz to pop out, thereby ending what was certainly one of the most memorable games ever played between the two storied rivals. While we will never know for certain, given the fact that players normally only received two home and two road uniforms each season, the possibility certainly exists that this was the very jersey worn by Yastrzemski on that fateful day. Graded A10 by MEARS. There are currently fourteen Carl Yastrzemski jerseys listed in the MEARS census, but this is one of only four graded A10. LOA from Troy Kinunen/MEARS. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $823
