1922 Washington Senators Team-Signed Ball with Walter Johnson
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $4,700
1922 was Val Picinich’s final year with Washington, so it’s not surprising that this magnificent treasure was found among his personal effects: a 1922 Washington Senators team-signed ball. The twenty-one black-ink signatures appearing on this official American League (Johnson) ball are those of Walter Johnson (grading “8”), Goose Goslin, Sam Rice, Bucky Harris, Val Picinich, Donie Bush, Joe Judge, Roger Peckinpaugh, Patsy Gharrity, Clyde Milan (mgr.), Eric Erickson, Frank Brower, Howard Shanks, George Mogridge, Robert LaMotte, Jim Brillheart, Ray Francis, Nick Altrock (coach), Tom Zachary, and two others (illegible/unidentifiable). The year, “1922,” is written in black fountain pen across the sweet spot. Both the Peckinpaugh and Judge signatures display a moderate degree of bleeding, otherwise the signatures range in grade from “3” to “9,” averaging “6.” All of the manufacturer’s stampings remain bold and legible, and the ball displays light soiling. In Excellent condition overall. Early 1920s team-signed balls are particularly rare and the offered example is exceptional both with respect to its provenance and condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000/$2,000. SOLD FOR $4,700
