Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig Original Statue by Palmer Murphy
Starting Bid - $500, Sold For - $3,819
Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig are frozen in time in this extraordinarily detailed cold-cast statue by renowned artist Palmer Murphy. This piece, which is similar in design to that of a limited-edition bronze statue of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig produced by Murphy in 2000, has been consigned directly by the artist and is one of only two examples ever produced. According to Murphy, he was commissioned in 2004 by a private collector to produce this special piece in bronze. Furthermore, it was agreed that no other bronze examples of this particular statue would ever be made. After Murphy produced the bronze piece for the client he then produced a second piece in cold cast, or bonded bronze as it is sometimes referred to, for his personal collection. Unfortunately, in the process of producing this piece the mold was accidentally broken, thus insuring that no other examples of this design would ever be made. Therefore, this is one of only two such statues ever made (one in bronze, which is in private hands, and this example, done in cold cast). This piece differs from Murphy’s 2000 limited-edition bronze statue of Ruth and Gehrig with regard to the base. Here, Murphy has incorporated the design of the famous Yankee Stadium facade along the perimeter, which only serves to further enhance the overall visual appeal of this striking work. Murphy is best known for his bronze statues, and his work has been displayed at both the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown and at the Babe Ruth Museum in Baltimore. This is an extremely high quality work of art that could be displayed proudly in many settings and different types of collections. As a point of reference, an example of Murphy’s 2000 limited-edition bronze statue of Ruth and Gehrig appeared in Robert Edward Auctions 2008 sale (Lot 1291), where it realized a final price of $4,406. Height: 11 inches. Weight: 7 lbs. Reserve $500. Estimate $1,000+. SOLD FOR $3,819
