Circa 1993 Sandy Koufax Signed Limited-Edition Stephen Holland Giclee

Starting Bid - $800, Sold For - $3,525

Original giclee on canvas, titled The Stare, hand numbered "K19/32," flawlessly signed in gold paint pen by both Koufax (grading "10") and artist Stephen Holland. This is a rare "Koufax" proof of this classic work (as noted by the "K" designation before the limitation number) and the first such example we have ever offered. (Our consignor has told us that the Koufax proofs were all originally given to Koufax as part of his contractual agreement with Holland. We are also aware of other "K" designated proofs, again limited to 32 in number [Koufax's uniform number], of subsequent Holland Koufax artworks.) "The Stare," which was released in the early 1990s, not only represents one of Holland's earliest pieces but also his first of several paintings of Sandy Koufax. The numbered prints of The Stare were limited to just 170 and were quickly sold out. This piece, because it was never offered to the public and was instead given to Koufax, is all the more highly regarded by collectors. It is also the most recognizable artwork of Koufax ever created and considered by many to be one of Holland's greatest works. Stephen Holland is an internationally acclaimed sports artist. In 1993 he was named the Sports Artist of the Year by the American Sport Art Museum, and he was also one of twelve artists selected by the United States Olympic Committee to represent the 100th Anniversary of the Olympics. The piece measures 29 x 36 inches and is in Near Mint condition. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 36 x 43 inches. Please Note: Due to the size and/or weight of this lot, shipping costs (depending on where it is sent and its method of shipping) may be substantial. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $800. Estimate $1,500/$2,500. SOLD FOR $3,525
