Mickey Mantle Steven Kaufman Artwork from Mantle's Personal Collection

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,293

Original Mickey Mantle screenprint (40 x 40 inches) by renowned artist Steven Kaufman. The image is printed on canvas and has been hand embellished by the artist. The artwork is signed by Kaufman in black felt-tip pen on the reverse. This piece comes with the special provenance of having personally belonged to Mickey Mantle and once prominently resided in Mantle's personal collection. The Mantle family originally sold it at the estate auction of Mickey Mantle's collection in 2003 and is accompanied by a COA signed by Merlyn Mantle (Mickey's wife) as well as his two sons, David and Danny Mantle. Steven Kaufman is one of the most well known pop artists of the modern era. He began his career as an assistant to Andy Warhol at The Factory and it was during his time there that he received his now familiar nickname, SAK, from Warhol. Like his mentor, Kaufman is a unique individual and both his artwork and actions have always reflected a deep social conscience. Over the years he has created a number of memorable works promoting both AIDS awareness and racial harmony. He also has created works for the Holocaust Museum. Generally associated closely with contemporary artists from New York's creative community such as Keith Haring, Jean Michael Basquiat, and Kenny Scharf, Kaufman has rightfully established his own identity melding pop art traditions with innovative approaches. To date, he has created works in fifteen distinct artistic "styles" (second only to Picasso in that regard), and his many subjects have included celebrities (Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe, Muhammad Ali), historical icons (Beethoven, Lincoln, Einstein, Mozart), and, like Warhol, American icons (Campbell's Soup, MGM Lion, American Gothic). This is a striking and beautiful work with a strong pop art flavor and a unique and significant provenance. Dimensions: 40 x 40 inches. Please note: Due to the size and weight of this piece, and depending on where it is sent, shipping fees for this item could be substantial. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,293
