Mickey Mantle Collector's Club Kit with Mantle Personally Signed Letter

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $411

During the mid 1980s, Mickey Mantle's business associates sought to capitalize on the growing demand for Mantle's autograph by forming the Mickey Mantle Collector's Club. Upon payment of a $15 fee, members received a personally signed welcome letter from Mantle, a membership card, two newsletters (titled Number Seven) per year, and, most important, the opportunity to purchase Mantle signed items at a discount. Presented here is a rare membership kit to the Mickey Mantle Collector's Club comprised of a one-page typed introductory letter (8.5 x 11 inches) signed by Mantle in blue ink (grading "10"), the original mailing envelope, postmarked April 20, 1984, a membership card (4 x 2.25 inches) featuring Mantle's portrait image on the front, a copy of the January 1985 Number Seven newsletter (8.5 x 11 inches, three pages), and a two-page price list (8.5 x 11 inches) for various Mantle-signed items that could be purchased at discounted prices by members. In looking at the list now, membership certainly had its privileges back then. A Mantle single-signed ball could be obtained for $9.95, a Mantle/DiMaggio signed ball was available for $29.95, and the cost of a Mantle signed bat was only $75. Included with the kit is the original sign-up flyer for the club (8.5 x 9.5 inches), minus the registration form along the base, which has been cut off and mailed in. We do not know how long the Mickey Mantle Collector's Club remained in operation, but it was probably very short-lived. While this club is well known and has a great significance both to Mantle's post-playing career and the development of the memorabilia field in general, we have never seen another example of this membership kit. Aside from normal mailing folds, all of the letter-size items are in Excellent to Mint condition. The membership card (numbered "106" on the reverse) has not been filled out and is in Mint condition. Total: six items (Mantle signed letter, original mailing envelope, membership card, newsletter, price list, and original sign-up flyer). LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $300. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $411
