1955 Brooklyn Dodgers Official National League Championship Presentation Award

Starting Bid - $1,000, Sold For - $1,175

This extraordinary official National League award, which recognizes the Brooklyn Dodgers as League Champion for 1955, is notable both for its great historical significance and artful design. This is a very substantial piece. It is designed as a special presentation certificate with a wood plaque backing and Lucite covering. This is an award of the highest caliber of production values, as is appropriate for the event it commemorates. The certificate (9 x 12 inches), printed and colored entirely by hand in grand calligraphic style, features the National League logo along the top and the 1955 season-ending records for all eight National League teams in the center. Above the League standings it reads: "Championship Award - 1955 Greetings - Official National League records establish the following record of games won and lost by National League Clubs during the Championship Season of 1955.” Below the standings it continues “By virtue of having the highest percentage of games won, the Brooklyn National League Baseball Club, 'Brooklyn Dodgers,' is hereby declared 1955 Champion of The National League of Professional Baseball Clubs and is entitled to fly the National League pennant at its park symbolizing said Championship until the close of the 1956 season. Signed Warren Giles, President and Secretary." (The Giles signature on this piece appears to be in the hand of the artist.) The certificate, which is in Mint condition, is covered in Lucite (as the award is designed) and remains firmly attached to its wood backing (11 x 14 inches) as made. Produced by Scroll Studio of Chicago, Illinois, as noted by the vintage label on the reverse. (Scroll Studio specialized in this style of award and is still in business to this day.) This is the first such championship certificate award we have ever seen, for either League, leading us to believe that this may be a unique award (in these early years before Championship trophies) that may have been produced for a special presentation to the Brooklyn ownership (as opposed to one of a series of similar awards presented in many different years). Our consignor, who has a special connection to the Dodgers, unfortunately has no knowledge or recollection of the circumstances of its presentation, and has suggested the possibility that this award was likely presented on opening day of 1956, the day the players received their 1955 World Series rings. 1955 was a historic season for the Dodgers franchise as it captured its first and only World Championship while in Brooklyn. The victory in 1955 was especially cathartic for the residents of Flatbush, as it erased the bitter memories of four recent World Series losses, not to mention an excruciating playoff loss to the Giants in 1951. Very few Brooklyn Dodgers team items of such great significance exist and the fact that it commemorates the 1955 season, the most memorable year in team history, makes it all the more significant. This is an extraordinary and highly significant 1955 Brooklyn Dodgers display piece and official National League presentation award that, quite literally, recognizes the team as League Champions in the most historic and celebrated year of the Brooklyn Dodgers franchise. Reserve $1,000. Estimate (open). SOLD FOR $1,175
