Circa 1919 Tris Speaker Full-Size Decal Bat
Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $1,293
This circa 1919 H&B Louisville Slugger "40 T.S." full-size decal bat features a colorful portrait of Hall of Fame outfielder Tris Speaker on the barrel, as well as the "Louisville Slugger" brand name and Speaker's facsimile signature. The decals on these bats are easily chipped and scratched, which is the reason why so few pristine examples are known today. The decal on the offered bat is in outstanding condition overall, far superior to those normally seen. The decal label is approximately 90% complete and intact, with no restoration whatsoever, which these days has become somewhat of a rarity for portrait decal bats. Overall, the decal grades "7" (on a scale of "1" to "10"). The 34-inch bat displays moderate wear, including a number of small indentations on the back of the barrel, and the centerbrand stampings are light, but clearly legible. Ideally, the bat is lighter in tone than many other full-size decal bats we have seen, thus providing greater contrast for the decal (darker wood often dulls the brightness of the decal). Although the bat is technically in Very Good to Excellent condition, most of the wear is relegated to the back of the barrel, so the bat, when properly displayed, presents as Excellent. Reserve $300. Estimate $500/$1,000. SOLD FOR $1,293
