1908 Detroit Tigers Detroit Free Press Pictorial Supplement

Starting Bid - $300, Sold For - $529

This rare pictorial supplement to the Sunday, October 11, 1908, issue of the Detroit Free Press features portrait images of twenty-five members of the American League Champion Detroit Tigers. This is a very unusual and striking premium that we have not seen before. Its great rarity is no doubt related to the fact that it was issued on only a single day. The portraits, which are arranged in an attractive diamond motif, include Ty Cobb (smiling, no less), manager Hughie Jennings, Sam Crawford, George Mullin, Bill Coughlin (noted as "Capt."), Ed Summers, "Wild Bill" Donovan, and Germany Schaefer. Also pictured are team president Frank Navin, and owner William Yawkey. Each individual is identified in print next to his image. "American League Champions 1908-09" is lettered along the top border. (It was the custom of the time to refer to the current League champions as champions for the following season as well.) Detroit won its second of three consecutive pennants in 1908 and once again faced the Chicago Cubs in the World Series. On the day this supplement was issued, the Tigers were defeated by the Cubs by a score of 6-1 in Game 2 of the World Series held at Chicago's West Side Park. The loss put the Tigers in a two-games-to-none hole which they were unable to climb out of, eventually losing the Series in five games. In addition to being issued on only a single day, the fact that these supplements were printed on newspaper stock, and thus are easily susceptible to damage, has contributed to few examples surviving the ages, let alone in such fine condition. The supplement (8.5 x 12 inches) is in a remarkable state of preservation, with only a single diagonal crease in the lower left corner, and a few very light surface wrinkles. While technically in Very Good to Excellent condition overall, it certainly displays as Excellent. Matted and framed to total dimensions of 13 x 17 inches. Reserve $300. Estimate $500+.
