Circa 1972 New York Yankees Old-Timers' Day Signed Ball with DiMaggio and Mantle
Starting Bid - $200, Sold For - $529
Official American League (Cronin) ball signed in a variety of inks by the following twenty-seven former New York Yankees players: Joe DiMaggio (sweet spot, "6"), Mickey Mantle (sweet spot, "6"), Waite Hoyt, Whitey Ford, Johnny Mize, Bill Dickey, Joe Sewell, Earle Combs, Gene Woodling, Gil McDougald, Bill Skowron, Jim Turner, Vic Raschi, Bobby Richardson, Irv Noren, Allie Reynolds, Bob Shawkey, Charlie Silvera, Tom Morgan, Ralph Terry, Hank Bauer, Tommy Henrich, Spud Chandler (sweet spot), Eddie Lopat, Tom Tresh, Bob Turley, and Elston Howard. Signatures range from "6" to "10," averaging "7." Based on the players who have signed, it is a virtual certainty that this ball was originally obtained and signed at a Yankees Old-Timers' Day game during the early 1970s. It is interesting to note that Mantle's signature is perfectly centered on the sweet spot, indicating that his was the first of the three signatures occupying that space. DiMaggio probably took that as an insult, which might be the reason that he signed his name in the opposite direction of Mantle's. Regardless, the combination of their signatures on any ball, let alone the sweet spot, is rare and adds a significant additional dimension of interest. The ball, which dates from the 1960-1973 manufacturing period, displays light overall age toning and is otherwise in Near Mint condition. LOA from James Spence/JSA. Reserve $200. Estimate $400/$800.
